A Sworn Translator – an Autodidactic or a University Student? Legal regulations vs a sworn translator’s practice

Summary/Abstract: The paper focuses on the growing demand to prepare sworn translators for new challenges resulting from the changes that have taken place since the moment of Poland’s accession to the European Union. It points to loopholes in the law governing the profession of a sworn translator, and its inadequacy to the contemporary reality of translations’ exchange. The paper notes the quantitative and qualitative aspect of the growth in the number of documents that require sworn translation which calls for awareness and competence-raising of sworn translators. It stresses the need of providing didactic support to translators of less common languages due to a virtual lack of academic programmes and in-service workshops dedicated to this professional group. The paper proposes the introduction of a training process for sworn translators based on the master-apprentice model.
