Summary/Abstract: This paper critically considers G. Prohorov’s claim that Constantine-Cyril created the Cyrillic alphabet. According to Prohorov, the glagolitic alphabet was created much earlier – in the VIIth с. by Cyril of Cappadocia. The author of this paper argues: 1. that the glagolitic alphabet was the first Slavic alphabet and that it was created by Constantine-Cyril; 2. that glagolitic was based on the Greek alphabet; 3. that Constantine-Cyril was a brilliant “grammarian”, who created an original system of letters reflecting linguistic principles; 4. that the glagolitic alphabet was wide spread and continued to be used in Bulgarian scriptoria until the beginning of the XIIIth с.
