Summary/Abstract: A belief that a startle was a cause of multiple diseases’ development in people was widely spread among Karelian population. Theconcept of the origin of fright, diseases caused by the startle, and possible ways of treating such conditions in Karelian population arestudied in the article. The purpose of the study is to; firstly, identify and compare Karelian beliefs related to the concept of fright and;secondly, to define the names of the fright and diseases caused by the startle. Comparisons of various collected lexical units inherentto the part of Karelian language in focus with other lexical units characteristic of different Karelian dialogues is conducted. The presentedmaterial is of particular significance due to its novelty. The problem is studied for the first time. As a result of the conductedresearch it is possible to assert that beliefs in such phenomenon as fright were customary for Karelian population. The conclusion ofthe study is substantiated by the earlier published speech samples and materials collected by the author.
