Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the influence of Darwin’s ideas on American political thinking in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is argued that, while evolution clearly played a major role in Social Darwinism, it also influenced the arguments of those who rejected Social Darwinist thinking, such as Lester Ward.
