Summary/Abstract: Institutional investors have become key players on financial markets, both in developed countries, and in developing ones, contributing to the increase in market depths and in their degree of innovation, sophistication and liquidity. Risk hedging global strategies promoted by these actors and their expansion into the global financial environment are explanations for the development of derivatives markets of futures and options type in the past few years and for the increase in foreign investments in countries with emerging economies. The increase in the institutional investors’ importance is emphasised in this survey by means of indicators such as: the dynamics of the overall financial assets administered by these entities in developed countries, the ratio of financial assets value in the gross domestic product, the ratio of the institutional investors’ assets in the GDP in OECD countries, the ratio of the pension funds assets in the GDP in OECD countries, the ratio of direct participations held by individual investors in the capital of the companies listed on the European capital markets, the increase in the amount of buyouts and mergers in the financial domain, etc.
