Summary/Abstract: This article compares three contemporary Balkan novels – Serbian, Romanian and Bulgarian; the comparative analysis is made on level of memory of recent past. It explores the inner predisposition of the Balkan peoples to irrational thinking, to reticent communities and provokes reliance on utopias and loyalty to ideals, the overexposure of which leads to the great cataclysms of 20th century. The article looks for the common basis which makes the formation of the Balkan canon.
