Summary/Abstract: The main objectives of the article were to (1) delineate the dilemmas connected with the definition of neglect (compared to abuse) and the consequences of neglect in the short and long term as well as to (2) analyze the recent research on neglect of disabled people, showing the differences in the prevalence of neglect in thegeneral population and in the disabled persons, and presenting common forms of physical and emotional neglect of the disabled . The literature on the subject shows that neglect is the most common form of maltreatment and the disabled are especially at risk of neglect. The common forms of their neglect include: neglect inbasic care, ensuring safety, emotional warmth, stability, stimulation, setting boundaries and guidance. The social context of neglect and disability is also emphasized.
