The Meaning of the Term трьстаѣ in the Glagolitic Euchology of Sinai

Summary/Abstract: In the celebration of the Vespers of the Whitsunday in the glagolitic Euchology of Sinai is found the term трьстаѣ which has never been satisfactorily translated and explained neither from a linguistic or from a liturgical point of view. In the present note the structure of the Vespers is analysed, the text of the deacon’s litany from the new leaves is reconstructed and an explanation of our term is reached. Трьстаѣ does not mean “Trisaghion”, as all scholars had thought, but expresses, although incorrectly, the rare technical term τρίστιχος meaning “deacon’s litany of three petitions” (such as, for instance, the “small Ekteny” in the modern Slavonic practice).
