Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is to present and critically evaluate two distinct tendencies in pragmatics studies – inferential pragmatics and form-function pragmatics. The goal of inferential pragmatics is to explicate the semantics-pragmatics distinction, whereas the form-function pragmatics proposes a wider understanding of pragmatics – the interface between syntax, semantics and pragmatics. Arguments are provided for the advantages and disadvantages of both tendencies.
