Summary/Abstract: The goal of the paper is a critical analysis of representative research on lying, deception, misleading, bullshit and withholding of information in philosophy of language and linguistic pragmatics predominantly in scholarly research in English. Studies on lying and deception by Bulgarian philosophers are also commented on. The analysis is carried out within the theoretical framework of Paul Grice’s theory of communication and John Austin’s and John Searle’s speech act theory. In the analysis of lying and its cognate concepts the paper focuses on the different criteria of what the speaker says or asserts, on the one hand, and what he/she implies, on the other, as well as on his/her intention in the accomplishment of the communicative act.
