Summary/Abstract: Relations with Turkic and Caucasian Muslims have been a crucial factor in the development of the Ukrainian identity, although they are not well known and often misinterpreted. They are often looked at through the prism of the Cossacks fighting with the Tartars and Turks. However, one cannot imagine the Cossacks representing the essence of what is Ukrainian without understanding the profound impact of the Turks and Tartars – who were often their allies, not enemies – on the Cossack way of life.
