Political and Social Activities of Jadvyga Chodakauskaitė-Tūbelienė in 1918–1940

Summary/Abstract: Based on the periodical press and literature of that time and the memoirs of contemporaries, the author analyses the biography of the prominent leader of Lithuanian women organisations, wife of the Prime Minister Jadvyga Chodakauskaitė-Tūbelienė. The author reveals the most important episodes of her political and social activities in 1918–1940. The article presents the most important facts about her bright personal and family life and her relations with the family of President Antanas Smetona. During the period of over 20 years after the restoration of Lithuania’s statehood it is the first scientific research elaborating on the activities of the woman who can easily be called the second lady of the state.
