Summary/Abstract: Given the large amount of specialized vocabulary occurring in ESP texts and the fact that teachers of language will always be at a disadvantage in relation to the specific knowledge involved by tackling with specialist subjects, they need to focus on what they are expected to achieve as language professionals, i.e. build their learners’ linguistic competence and help them with strategies for coping successfully. Dealing with technical vocabulary within the framework of a communicative approach to foreign language teaching/learning can become part of a rewarding and motivating exercise if the learners are trained to turn to good account their already existing linguistic and conceptual knowledge in order to explore the texts. The paper will present some practical examples from the author’s current teaching practice, look at some of the strategies employed for dealing with ESP vocabulary and make considerations on the processes involved.
