Summary/Abstract: An increasing amount of people use many computer-mediated formats (forums, blogs, social networks) in order to communicate every day. Emotions are of main importance in any human interaction even in computermediated communication. Emotions are manifested through the ear channel (intonation), the visual channel (facial expression, posture, gestures) and verbal channel. The purpose of this article is to show the different ways to express emotions on the discussion forums. We will try to see whether the punctuation with expressive emoticons or smiley faces, exclamation points, question marks, longer or repeated characters to simulate intonation, abbreviations sharing an emotional state (eg. MDR for "laugh out loud") play a similar role as the paraverbal and non-verbal communication. Non-verbal and para-verbal play an important role in the transmission of emotions in oral communication: mimics, gestures, intonation, modulation, posture. In computer-mediated communication (CMC) these no longer exist, but they are replaced by the above mentioned items. We propose a reminder of the role of emotions in social interactions and describe the mechanisms involved in the production and comprehension of emotions. Our paper aims to do an analysis of a corpus of messages and extracts from different forums.
