Summary/Abstract: In a worldwide context one can easily ascertain the necessity of reassessment of classic professional functions and an innovation of roles and responsibilities of a teacher, who is required to be responsive to new, to be willing to accept changes, to have a critical intelligence, etc. European Commission work documents highlighted the important place and role that teachers have in the new society based on knowledge, as well as the skills able to materialize European common principles in order to professionalize the academic career. Romanian cultural space ranges to standards and changes suggested to the teachers training systems, in three categories of processes: globalization of societies and economies, heading towards the knowledge of the society through cultural practices, including educational practices and the defining of education as a philosophy of teaching. Priorities and tendencies in the development of an academic career are identified and analysed in Romanian pedagogical debates. To put the basis of a successful academic career, the mentor has an extremely important role, easing the professional insertion of young teachers. Mentoring, as creative experience, represents an ambient for excellence, a model of manifestation of an exceptional personality. Last years pedagogic research and practice insisted on the activity of mentoring, which first appeared in education in the business area, as a concept very much used in the educational process. Thus, the teacher is leaded to form and develop an entrepreneurial culture that, together with the organisational culture, assures a new modern vision on life and profession. By promoting and developing the mentoring activity in Romania, it is intended to increase the quality of students from the faculties with pedagogical profile and of entrant teachers, to assure highly qualified human resources for education and other domains, to emphasize the most valuable ideas in the domain of initial professional formation and continuous training. A range of projects, most of them funded from European Funds, having mentoring as main theme, develop activities in schools, contributing directly to the improvement of qualification of teachers and mentors. The Romanian Mentors' Associations intends to gain official acknowledgement, as distinct professions, for the occupations of mentor and mentor trainer.
