Summary/Abstract: The notion of maltreated child has a very curious history, particularly in terms of socio-cultural anthropology. For a long time maltreatment was not even conceived, because social organization did not make possible this reflection. In some communities, the killing of newborns who were consider not to be able to cope with social demands, was even legitimized, as well as education, through tough, inhuman rules. Child abuse has been described since written documents exist, but the phenomenon has attracted the attention of professionals around the 1960s, when American pediatrician C. Henry Kempe, and the American pediatrician Frederic N. Silverman present the results of studies related to multiple fractures of beaten children, forming a "picture" that will be called beaten child syndrome or Silverman syndrome. In this paper I will present an analysis of case law made by studying documents, protocols, plans, evaluation reports of child maltreatment cases investigated by Child Protection from Neam in 2004-2009. I analysed how the risk factors are contributing to the spread of child abuse, at the physical, psychological and social level.
