Summary/Abstract: English has become the lingua franca of technical professions. As a result, Romanian technical universities demand their students to study at least one course in a foreign language. This paper discusses specific terminology produced in a technical context, especially related to ICT vocabulary that EST students regularly use both in Romanian and English. The discourse of engineering can be integrated into the world of technical discourse by taking into consideration its common linguistic features and the specificity given by the vocabulary in use. Technical vocabulary involves specific terminology, fixed phrase structures and everyday words which have been given a certain meaning. Although knowledge content and context heavily influence understanding and interpretation of specialised information, the semantic content of technical vocabulary may also influence representations of information about the real world. The aim of the paper is to discuss characteristics of vocabulary in the field of computing and ways of teaching and learning it during the ESP courses.
