Perspectives on the Concept of Politeness in Professional Settings

Summary/Abstract: The paper provides a description of the concept of politeness from a pragmatic perspective. It also underlines some of the main issues that arise in researching politeness as a pragmatic theory and it argues the nature of politeness and its relevance at the level of communicative practices in a professional context. It is generally agreed that there are different degrees of politeness to be illustrated in linguistic expressions. Understanding the mechanism of choice is the key to understand the politeness phenomenon.
