Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the manner in which the Republic of Slovenia has prepared for and responded to the increased arrival of refugees since September 2015. It details the plans the government made and implemented when it became obvious that the "Western Balkans migration route" would also include Slovenia. The paper presents experience from the ground level, describing reception conditions provided for refugees and the role of state as well as non-state actors when a system of registration, reception, accommodation and transportation was established by the Slovenian authorities. However, the authors conclude, repressive measures decided by the government such as the building of a razor-wire fence on the Slovenian-Croatian border, the lowering of standards of international protection, push-backs of refugees, and ultimately the closure of the Balkan route raise concerns about future developments in Ljubljana.
