Summary/Abstract: History teaching in a democratic Europe should take up a key position in building responsible and active citizens, and building respect for all kinds of differences. The paper states that history should play an important role in promoting the fundamental values, such as, tolerance, mutual understanding, human rights and democracy. The history should be part of education policy that will directly affect the development and progress of young people. With their active participation in the building of Europe, and peaceful development of societies in a global perspective, in a spirit of understanding and trust. History as such must not be an instrument of ideological manipulation, propaganda. Through history should allow the Balkan nations to raise their individual and collective identity through knowledge of their own heritage in local, regional, national, European and global dimensions. It should be a tool to prevent crimes of humanity. Hence undoubtedly the significance of history in teaching as it allows the abovementioned.
