Summary/Abstract: Modern economic realities force on functioning within them economic entities, being active and innovative. Unfortunately, the desires of innovative entrepreneurs are frequently undermined by various types of emerging obstacles, which can include problems with financing innovations or the lack of sufficient knowledge concerning possibilities of innovations. The significant role in this case is performed by institutional environment that promotes, supports and spreads innovative trends in the economy. Institutional environment includes institutions such as: government institutions, innovation and research centres or financing institutions. The aim of the present discourse is to present one of the elements of institutional environment which supports innovativeness, simultaneously economic condition, and competitiveness position, presented on the basis of Nordic countries among which there are economies considered to be the most innovative and the most competitive in the world.
