ΚΑΝΑΣΥΒΙΓΙ, the Title of the Proto-Bulgarian Ruler (Thinking on the Idea of Supreme Power in Heathen Bulgaria)

Summary/Abstract: The present paper deals with the idea of supreme power, formulated in the Proto-Bulgarian title ΚΑΝΑΣΥΒΙΓΙ. The author tends to think that ΣΥΒΙΓΙ is the second part of the title and that it can be translated as “(ruler) by God” from the Indo-European *su- and baγa-, i.e. *su-baga. The Proto-Bulgarians used the Byzantine formula } Tκ Θεο‡ Dρχων as a translation of ΚΑΝΑΣΥΒΙΓΊ, thus emphasizing the idea of God’s approval of the ruler. This was a typical strategy for the early medieval European kings, both Christians and pagans. Probably the use of ΚΑΝΑΣΥΒΙΓΙ (822–836) has to be connected with the processes of centralization of power which took place in Bulgaria during the first three decades of the 9th century.
