Summary/Abstract: In the paper an attempt has been made for the reception of the Testament of St John of Rila throughout the different cultural-historical epochs to be followed by means of an inner textological analysis. The text of the Testament is conventionally divided into two parts: deductive and narrative. We assume that the deductive part is authentic. It is a precept of the most condensed type to the monks, and it is known from the instructions of the early Christian fatherpriests. We think that the narrative part was created at a later stage after the well-known passional of the saint so that the Testament could be legitimized and connected with an undoubted authority.
