Summary/Abstract: The priority of the development of payment instruments is to seek to replace cash transactions technology cashless settlement of liabilities. The use of payment cards allows increase the comfort and safety of transactions. The aim of the study was to present the development of the use of payment cards in Poland. The study presents the history and classification of cards with a focus on security of the payment instrument. Analysis of the characteristics of the major credit cards pointed to the dynamic development of the Polish market. Banks perceive modern technological solutions to achieve a competitive advantage in the market. One of the most dynamically developing market is the market for proximity cards, as evidenced by the steady annual increase in the number of cards of this type.
