Summary/Abstract: The ambivalence or the ambiguity of Diderot’s thought constitutes, besides all, his originality. His need for the Lights of reason, but also of the spiritual dimension, his critical mind, but also his quest of the mystery are found in his conduct of life, the last one being the real source of his work. The man of the reason is not exclusively the man of the barricades or the man of the non-compromise, but also the man of the borders. In order that the freedom of thought could work and escape the authority (that the German philosopher Kant evoked, for example, in his very well known article entitled “Was ist Aufklärung?”), it needs pure or/and gravitational borders.
