Summary/Abstract: Apart from the current acception of philosophy, which is, today, more like an articulated, coherent philosophical discourse, the antiques would normally understand it as a much more complex issue implying the discourse in a certain specifi c modus vivendi. This acception is also familiar to the old Church that defines itself, as opposed to the pagan world, as the true philosophy (vera philosophia), the high philosophy (akra philosophia), a Christian philosophy (philosophia christiana), connected not only to the content of the teachings of faith, but to practicing it in everyday life. The monachism would be, exceptionally, the keeper of this self comprehension of the old Church, that sees itself even today as a spiritual philosophy and a philosophy of fulfillment in the consecution of a solid patristic tradition that begins with the apostolic and apologetic Fathers and reaches a climax with the Holy Fathers in the IVth century.
