Summary/Abstract: Having read the most recent grammars of the Lithuanian language and academic course books (cf. e.g. DLKG 1997, LG 1997, Valeckien˙e 1998 and the literature listed there) we decided to review the meanings of Lithuanian verbal forms of the past iterative tense (Lith. b¯utasis daˇzninis laikas) (hereinafter called ‘past frequentative’). The past frequentative forms are a relatively new innovation in the Lithuanian language, not found in literary Latvian (cf. Smoczynski 1988). Dialectal evidence reveals uneven distribution of those forms in Lithuanian dialects as well (cf. Vidugiris 1998).
