Summary/Abstract: In spite of gradual decrease in the population of elementary school graduates, there is rather large discrepancy between demand and offer in upper secondary education in the Czech republic. For this reason, not all applicants can be admitted to high demand upper secondary schools. The tool for selection of pupils to these schools is the admission procedure. Its content and form has been much disputed both in the professional community and in the public. To thoroughly analyze the process of upper secondary school selection by the Czech pupils, in 2007 – 2009 we conducted a qualitative research project. The paper brings findings on how admission requirements affect the selection of upper secondary schools by pupils. Also, it describes how pupils perceive the selection procedure and how parents evaluate it. Based on these findings, the new legislature on admission to upper secondary schools in the Czech republic is considered.
