Summary/Abstract: The system of state-subsidised theatre in Lithuania, established in the second decade of the 20th century, was developed slowly and remained centralised during the entire interwar period. There search carried out has revealed that the state, having consolidated a large-scale centre of theatre activity in the capital Kaunas, addressed the challenges of theatre culture in the regions by fundingthe tours of the State Theatre and in reliance upon the amateur theatre of public organisations. The cases of unimplemented projects of the State Theatre in Panevėžys and Klaipėda show thatin the 1920s there was a lack of political will to decentralise the theatre system: The Ministry ofEducation failed to take advantage of favourable material conditions in Panevėžys and of socialones in Klaipėda. The state theatre system was decentralised only in the 1930s, after changes inthe strategy of cultural policy had been made: the Šiauliai department of the State Theatre wasfounded in 1931.
