Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to analyse the juridical and financial background of Lithuanian theatre during the Interwar period. The chronological borders that define the survey presented in the article are between 1919 (the first subsidized theatre was established) and 1939 (the last theatre law was passed). The main issue addressed in the article is the ambiguous status of the creative institution: in order to answer the question how autonomous was the Lithuanian theatre field during the Interwar period the very possibility of autonomous creation is put hereby under the close scrutiny.
