Summary/Abstract: Stanisław Barańczak is increasingly becoming recognized not only as a poet but also as a translator who incurs different, often extremely varied, emotions. Some may see his translations as outstanding equivalents of the English-language original texts, while others, on the contrary, as a consequence of the translator’s lack of discipline, resulting in distancing from the text. This paper discusses the limits of translation and possibilities of crossing them in the context of the translation work of Barańczak. The author presents texts from nonsense literature in order to show how the translator moves beyond the framework set by the original text, enriching it both in contents and formal aspect. The article also includes an attempt to answer the question about the translator’s status and whether crossing borders in translations can be justified.
