Summary/Abstract: In 2007 the European Union and the Republic of India launched negotiations on the Bilateral Trade and Investment Agreement (BTIA), the strategic aim of which is to create a free trade area between the parties. The negotiations on the ambitious and comprehensive FTA were brought to a standstill in 2013 due to disagreements between the parties on the commitments to be included in the BTIA. The main contentious issues that blocked the negotiation process were: the level of tariffs cuts on automobiles and agricultural products, trade in generic drugs, services, investments and regulations on public procurement.
