Summary/Abstract: The international protection of material goods and the environmental protection during armed conflict are governed by one of the fundamental principle of international humanitarian law, namely the principle of distinction. In this area, a distinction is made between civilian objects/goods - including cultural property - and military objects/goods. The main consequence is that, during armed conflict, parties are obliged to direct theirs attacks only against military objectives. The protected objects refers to: civilian objects (goods which are indispensable for the survival of the civilian population, works and installations containing dangerous forces), cultural goods and places of worship, and natural environment. The main justification for this approach is related to the fact that culture appears as an essential element of linguistic, religious and/or national identity of people and cultural goods are nothing but vectors through which this unique identity is transmitted. This paper illustrates the evolution and the perspectives in the international protection of cultural goods during armed conflicts.
