Summary/Abstract: This article focuses on the learning of medical language through bilingual immersion with native speakers of the target language. We started from the premise that there is true dialectics between science and language, since the latter is not only a scientific communication tool, but also an active principle involved in the conceptualization of specialized content. The study is based on the observation of eight French-Romanian tandem pairs who worked together at “Iuliu Hatieganu” University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Cluj-Napoca, between March 2013 and May 2014. The first part of the article explores the teaching strategies involved in the learning of medical Romanian and French through language immersion. The second part presents the results obtained by the participants in the tandem language-learning module as far as the acquisition of medical vocabulary was concerned. Linguistic, cultural, sociological and economic aspects were identified and analyzed. The last section analyzes the role of plurilingualism, especially foreign languages in contact, the interaction between native speakers and the interaction between different disciplines, for the parallel development of language competences and specific professional knowledge.
