Summary/Abstract: The paper is part of a larger research project tracing the use of humour in 20th century drama, particularly in the western dramatic canon, as defined by Harold Bloom. We make a very brief introduction to the notions of comic, humour, laughter, the canon itself and the West, ending with a more detailed analysis of the particularities of the incongruity theory of humour and its proponents. This sets the theoretical background for a wider study on the metamorphosis of the comic throughout the 20th century, well into the present.
