Summary/Abstract: We see them in libraries, and we sense the differences betweenthem and highly-cited literature. We know that many authors’ambition is to have a paper published in one of them. Whatis their role in the circulation of scientific findings? The aimof the study is to define, describe and evaluate the possibleeffects of “inconspicuous journals” (monographs, conferenceproceedings and other low-rated publications) onthe domain of scientific resources and the organization ofknowledge. Material and methods are casual but based oneveryday observations of a librarian and publisher. The publicationsin question are perceived as a disaster by critics ofthe publishing scene and scholarly communication, but theyare treated seriously by both publishers and the state quality-assurance system. They are apparently in the queue forthe points for citations, and while there is not much hope forthem in this field, they also seem to make a scene on theirown. They may be useful for scholars who are not matureenough to run for publishing in IF journals, and they providea good field for local and regional scientific communities tostrengthen their potential and communication patterns. To sumup, inconspicuous works have their own share in the world ofknowledge. They perhaps should not multiply, but there is noreason to suppress them for not providing “points” for theirpublishers.
