Summary/Abstract: Beginning of life in a new culture is usually accompanied by the emergence of culture shock. The aim of this paper is to describe that phenomenon. Before that, the concept of critical incident is explained in terms of being the starting point in analyzing cultural differences that potentially lead to conflicts. The stages of culture shock are described (honeymoon, disintegration, reintegration, autonomy, biculturality), according to Pedersen (Pedersen 1995) and then its potential negative psychological effects on individuals are considered. Some of the strategies for dealing with this phenomenon are also considered. In the end, the reverse culture shock is mentioned as the phenomenon which individuals undergo after returning to their own culture
