Summary/Abstract: Although they are generally perceived as negative, stereotypes are normal in every society. They represent the part of human aspiration to understand the world within the limits of natural capabilities. This is not an isolated process, but it is influenced by a large number of internal and external factors. The paper discusses different approaches to the study of stereotypes, the effects that the mass media have on their formation, as well as one of several possible divisions of the factors that influence the stereotype formation and which mass media are an important part of. Some of the most stereotypical socio-cultural aspects are presented to illustrate the functioning of stereotype formation under the influence of media. In the end, the importance of media literacy is underlined, especially in developing the ability to recognize the effects of stereotypes and in developing of critical and independent judgment when it comes to the construction of socio-cultural reality.
