Summary/Abstract: Serbian labor market is characterized by a high level and stable character of unemployment and long-term unemployment. However, in terms of unemployment, there are differences between developed and less developed regions in Serbia. These differences are especially prominent between northern and southern parts of the country. Examination of these regional differences is the subject of this paper. The authors focus on unemployment dynamics in the region of Southern and Eastern Serbia, with special reference to border districts. This region has highest unemployment and long-term unemployment rate, coupled with a very unfavourable structure of unemployment. In order to reduce regional differences in unemployment, well targeted pro-active policies are needed for the promotion of employment at the national, regional and district level. Programmes which are intended to promote employment of long-term unemployed should have priority.
