Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the motivation of small towns authorities to strategic planning. Its introduction presents motives of planing which are most often cited in the literature of the subject. Then the paper indicates that the actual motivation of local governments to its application differs significantly from what one would expect after reading this literature. The main part the article describes the progress and results of research aimed at advancing knowledge about the motivation of small towns authorities to strategic planning based on the content analysis of the strategies adopted and information on the timing of their adoption and the period of validity. In the next part the article contains the conclusions on overall level of motivation and one of the main motives of territorial planning – attracting EU funds. The ending refers to corrective actions, as well as premises and concepts for ongoing research on the presented problem.
