The Archive Chronograph and the Interpretative Paleia

Summary/Abstract: The article examines two ancient Slavonic manuscripts: the Archive Chronograph (the Chronograph kept in the archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow) and the Interpretative Paleia. By the method of textual analysis it is concluded that for their compilation were used numerous identical sources from various fields. The common structure of the two collections and the identical approach to their compilation strategy (notwithstanding their differing purposes) are an indication of their belonging to the same cultural and educational centre. By taking into consideration some additional circumstances, namely the list of the Byzantine emperors in the Archive Chronograph (until 921), the noteby presbyter Grigoryi, translated by John the Exarch, as well as the glagolitic traces in both manuscripts, the author suggests that the Chronograph and the Paleia came into existence in the Old Bulgarian culture approximately at the same time: the 10th century.
