The Newly Discovered Fresco “Presentation of the Virgin” in the Northern Lunette of the Narthex of Boyana Church

Summary/Abstract: The newly discovered fresco “Presentation of the Virgin” in 1992 in the northern lunette of the narthex of Boyana church belonging to the painting from 1259 is distinguished with its unique iconography. The episode with the miracular nourishing of Maria by the angel is represented in an unusual way. The two cherubims over the angel, the liturgical vessels on the altar-table and the treatment of the figure of the Virgin direct to eucharistic liturgical interpretation of the composition. The key to the explanation of the scene is to be found in the service for the day of the Presentation of the Virgin, November 21.
