Summary/Abstract: During the XIX century, the era of nationalism, Albanians were the only people in the region who did not feel the constant support of a great power. The massive conversion to Islam, which at the beginning, guaranteed them their full integration into the Ottoman state structure, in the XIX century, proved to constitute a reality that run against their national interests. Pashko Vassa and Sami Frashëri were the personalities who laid the foundations of the Albanian nationalist doctrine. Meanwhile, Ismail Kemal Vlora, on the 28th of November 1912, put into practice what Pashko Vassa and Sami Frashëri had already anticipated. He proclaimed the independence of Albania, precisely, at the very time of the collapse of the Ottoman rule in the Balkans.
