The Contribution of Prof. Eqrem Çabej to the Study of Albanian Folk Culture

Summary/Abstract: On August 13, 1980, at a time that he had just completed 72 years and was at the top of his faculties, the leader of the Albanological Sciences, the instructor of the People, the Academician, Prof. Eqrem Çabej left us. The loss of this eminent figure of Albanian science left a void not only in the field of linguistics, but also in that of popular culture, to which he had given a not less important contribution. Çabej's studies in the field of ethnology and folklore concerned fundamental questions of these disciplines, which he studied with erudition. He did not discuss the information on the subjects, the motives, the aesthetic values of the genres, but went into the essence of the phenomena of Albanian popular culture, considered them with the sagacity and the logic of the man of science, analyzed them on their distinctive features and on the regularities of their historical evolution. Çabej painted an exact panorama of the Albanian folk world, the spiritual constitution of the Albanian people, their customs and traditions, the various kinds of our heritage of folklore.
