Summary/Abstract: The article shows the problems of the Russian intelligentsia members and European intellectuals participation in social and political transformations of the contemporary world and features of their relationship with the authority. Given is the authors’ concept of the public importance of intelligentsia members and intellectuals in the context of a new variable model of of the Russian intelligentsia members and European intellectuals participation in public and political life. The conclusion is drawn that for the Russian intelligentsia members the major importance in their self-determination is the division into insiders and outsiders according to valuable reference points; for the European intellectuals in their relation both to the authority and to society the main criterion of a self-assessment and incentive motive in their social action is division into conformists and nonconformists.
