Summary/Abstract: This work discusses the phenomenon of sects and cults as new religious movements in the contemporary socialy and particularly their abrupt appearance in the areas of former Yugoslavia oafter the breakdown of communism, the disintegration of the society and its negative consequences. the attitude of official leading religious and different social institutions as well as the public opinion are taken into particular consideration. It was not difficult to find out that there was a high level of intolerance of all of them towards cults and sects. Namely, the stigmatizing of sects and cults oceurs in the socialy in general, but without any insight how much the socialy itself and the official church create, to some degree, assumptions for appearance of these religious movements. On the contrary, religiologists show an exaggerated tolerance towards these new religious movements and that is particularly referable to (auto)-destructive cults and sects.
