Functions of the Construction “Dativus Absolutus” in the Life of St. Simeon Neman

Summary/Abstract: The article deals with different functions of dativus absolutus in its most frequent use expressing differentiated temporal relations. The introductory analysis shows that even the essential temporal oppositions are not clearly distinguished. In the author’s opinion, there is no correlation between the type of participle in the surface structure and simultaneity or sequence respectively. The image is more complicated because of: 1) the presence of phasic verbs, 2) temporal periods corresponding to the states which are results of different actions, 3) the actions being the equivalent of negated other actions (or prevention of other actions).
