Summary/Abstract: The aim of this work is to look into the religion of the First Bulgarian Kingdom (prior to its Christianization) whether it could be considered as monotheistic or, as some researches claim, as primitive monotheism to the divinity Tangra. On the basis of all available sources — Proto-Bulgarian inscriptions, Byzantine and Latin narratives and archaeological exploration — it is demonstrated that the religion of the Proto-Bulgarians and of the First Bulgarian Kingdom was not monotheistic. One could not, therefore, speak about the determining role of the divinity Tangra in the process of the formation of the political ideology of the First Bulgarian Kingdom (681–852).
