Summary/Abstract: The article reviews the creative connections of the pianists Grigoriy and Yakov Ginzburg with Lithuania. The brothers Ginzburg were striking representatives of the Russian school of piano. Both were students of Alexander Goldenveiser (Grigoriy Ginzburg was raised by the Goldenveiser family after the death of his father when Grigoriy was six), and both were graduates of the Moscow Conservatory. Grigoriy Ginzburg (1904–1961) was a famous virtuoso pianist; in 1927 he was awarded a prize in the first Chopin Competition. Before World War II he gave concerts in Lithuania and Vilnius, which was then part of Poland. Yakov Ginzburg (1900–1963) was a professor of piano at the Lithuanian conservatory in Vilnius from 1945. Both musicians exercised a strong influence on Lithuanian piano art. The article analyses various aspects of this influence and gives a historical context for their work, particularly in view of the spread of Stalinism.
