Summary/Abstract: The article draws on the Lithuanian work of Adam Gottlob Casparini who in 1776 created a world-class baroque organ at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Vilnius. The author also concentrates on the state of development of musical culture in Lithuania in the second half of the eighteenth century in general. The Lithuanian musical culture of the time was both sufficiently developed and integrated with musical culture of Europe as a whole to enable the use and absorption of the Casparini organ into Vilnius musical life. Also, emblematic of this culture were the activities of Johann David Holland, a professional musician who came to Lithuania from Hamburg, of Dietrich Ewald von Grotthuss, an aristocratic lover of music and benefactor of musicians, and of several German organ masters who lived in Lithuania and built a number of excellent instruments. These examples reflect the multilayered quality of musical life of Lithuania during that period and show its connection with the pan-European processes of artistic development.
